Minnesota Caves: History & Lore

Minnesota has many caves, some known nationally. Carver’s was the earliest cave described in published literature after Jonathan Carver’s visit ten years before the Revolution. Fountain Cave was the birthplace of the capital city, St. Paul. Mystery and Niagara are the state’s best known caves. Far north, the violent waves of Lake Superior hammered out caves accessible only by kayak. Other caves were purely mythical. Learn about all of them from the geologist who wrote the book on the subject. Tue., April 1, 11 a.m., SPCC 219, Free

Subterranean Twin Cities

In Subterranean Twin Cities, geologist Greg Brick takes us on an adventurous educational tour into the caves and tunnels that make up the Twin Cities’ fascinating underground landscape. Brick shines a headlamp into the labyrinths beneath the streets and reminds us that what we see aboveground is only half the story. Novel geological and historical insights from each chapter of the book will be highlighted. Tue., April 22, 11 a.m., SPCC 219, Free
Presented by Greg Brick Ph.D., Professor of Geology, Editor of Journal Spelean History, Author of Minnesota Caves: History and Lore (2017) and Minnesota Underground (2019).
